THE ROYAL SCOTS DRAGOON GUARDS (Carabiniers & Greys)

The Pipes and Drums and the Military Band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards gained public acclaim in April 1972 when 'Amazing Grace' topped the Charts. Their recording won 14 Gold Discs and set the scene for favourite releases including 'Heykens Serenade' and 'The Little Drummer Boy'. Although the SCOTS DG Military Band passed from the Regiment in 1994 to form the Band of the Dragoon Guards, the finest musical tradition continues with the Pipes and Drums who were formally established in 1946 in the Royal Scots Greys. Their Colonel-in-Chief, King George VI took a great interest in the Pipes and Drums, granting the privilege of wearing the Royal Stewart tartan.

With the kilt and plaid the Pipers wear a dark blue doublet, the sporran is of grey horse hair with tassels of black and red, similar to the jowl plumes which hung from the officers’ bridles. The feather bonnets have the distinctive yellow vandyke band and a white feather plume. The plaid brooch bears the White Horse of Hanover and the Eagle and Carabines badge is worn on the sporran, the cross belt and as a plume clasp. The Drummers wear a scarlet tunic, blue overalls with yellow stripes, boots and spurs, and a white plume on the black bearskin, the traditional full dress uniform of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. The Bass Drummer wears a red plume over the white bearskin, reputed to have been presented by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia who was Colonel-in-Chief from 1894 to 1916. The Regiment continues with the honour of HM The Queen as Colonel-in-Chief, and HRH The Duke of Kent, who served with the Regiment, as Deputy Colonel-in-Chief.

The story of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys) already spans 320 years. Through the Royal Scots Greys, whose predecessors were raised by King Charles II in 1678, the Regiment is the oldest surviving Cavalry of the Line in the British Army, and Scotland's only Regular Cavalry Regiment. With the official abbreviation of SCOTS DG, today's Regiment was formed in 1971 by the amalgamation of the 3rd Carabiniers (who originated from 1685 as 3rd Dragoon Guards and 6th Dragoon Guards - until merging in 1922) and the Royal Scots Greys.

Displayed on the Regimental Standard are just fifty of the eighty nine battle honours won by these Regiments in wars and campaigns spanning three centuries. Although too numerous to record all the valiant actions, the most celebrated of these are Waterloo, Balaklava and Nunshigum. During the Gulf conflict in 1991, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards deployed with 7th Armoured Brigade (The Desert Rats). In the ground war the Regiment spearheaded the attack into Kuwait. The Pipers and Drummers returned to their roles as Tank Crewmen whilst the Bandsmen manned the Regiment's tracked armoured ambulances with the forward tank units, providing medical and casualty evacuation. Injuries suffered by the Regiment were few but the Band was called upon to treat many Iraqi casualties. More recently, the Regiment served in Bosnia in 1997 in support of UN and NATO, and in 1998 received the world's most up to date tank - Challenger II.

Today, with other cavalry regiments, SCOTS DG is part of the Royal Armoured Corps. Although horses have long been replaced by tanks and other armoured vehicles, it is the cavalry spirit of the past which provides the inspiration for the future of this most distinguished Regiment. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are set to continue well into the next century, to the inevitable skirl of the pipes and beat of the drums, in both traditional and modern styles.

Compiled by Lieutenant Colonel RJ Binks, Regimental Secretary, Home HQ SCOTS DG, Edinburgh Castle.
